This time last year (Mar 2011), my team conducted online research with 1,014 consumers & professionals (18+ years), regarding awareness of and interest in purchasing tablets for either personal or business use. The graph below shows what these individuals planned - and their plans were very similar to the market reality...
Looking at this data in hindsight says it was a good indicator of the actual market trends - 2011 was a landmark year in tablet adoption, which is in line with the fact that 76% of the working Americans surveyed in March of 2011 said they planned to buy a tablet. Approximately 27 million tablets (wi-fi and embedded modem) were sold in the US in 2011.
Of those sold, the iPad was the most common type of tablet purchased, representing approx 65% of tablets sold. This is in line with the primary research conducted as well, where the most common type of tablet that those surveyed planned to purchase was an iPad (in this case about 50% of the those planning to purchase a tablet planned to purchase an iPad).
About this data - it shows the percentage of respondents that indicated plans to purchase a given type of tablet (percentage of total respondents that either already had a tablet or planned to buy one). Respondents were given the choice to indicate for each type of tablet if they already owned it, planned to purchase it (shown below), were interested in purchasing it or had not plans to purchase.
